Founded in 2004, The Village Apothecary is owned and operated by Katrina Bubas Stevens, local Portland, Oregon, herbalist and retired midwife with Northwest Community Midwives. Katrina began her herbal studies as a young girl, watching her mother wildcraft when her family went camping in the summers on the east coast, and growing medicinal herbs in the family garden.
When Katrina became pregnant with her first child in 1998, she learned about herbs for pregnancy, labor & birth, postpartum, and breastfeeding support through self-study.
To deepen and broaden her knowledge, she studied Master Herbalism at the American College of Health Sciences (previously the Australasian College of Herbal Studies) in 2003, Pacific Northwest wildcrafting with Arctos School of Herbal and Botanical Studies in 2008, and herbal studies specific to women's health through the childbearing year at Birthingway College of Midwifery from 2010-2013. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery from Birthingway in 2015. Katrina is also a Level II Reiki practitioner, and mother to two amazing children, Ezekiel and Roma.
Katrina organically grows or ethically wild-harvests most of the herbs used in her preparations. What she can't get fresh and local, she purchases certified organic through Mountain Rose Herbs and Oshala Farm in Applegate Valley, OR. Katrina is also environmentally conscious, and has put a lot of consideration into the packaging of her products. All packaging is either recyclable or compostable, and most are reusable. When not growing, harvesting, and making herbal medicine, Katrina enjoys spending time with her family, cooking with wild foods, and continuing to learn from the natural world.
